Using external MX servers with BigV servers

#1

Hi All,
I’m having a few issues with trying to set my MX records on my domain to use a 3rd party mail server. I think I’ve cracked the TinyDNS configuration (see below), but every time I attempt to update my records I get the following error message and searching the forums I’ve not easily found a solution.

ERROR

hound:~# symbiosis-dns-generate --upload --verbose

Hi Paul, I think you may just be editing the wrong file (i.e. the output directory, which the system manages for you). The file you should edit is probably called /srv/paulbeevers.co.uk/config/dns/paulbeevers.co.uk.txt

#3

Hi Matthew,
I’m definitely editing the DNS file under the domain rather than the temp file:

hound# cat /srv/paulbeevers.co.uk/config/dns/paulbeevers.co.uk.txt

#
#  Nameserver records.
#
.paulbeevers.co.uk::a.ns.bytemark.co.uk:300
.paulbeevers.co.uk::b.ns.bytemark.co.uk:300
.paulbeevers.co.uk::c.ns.bytemark.co.uk:300

<SNIP>
#
# MX record -- no IP defined, as this is done separately above.
#
@paulbeevers.co.uk::mx0.123-reg.co.uk:10:14400
@paulbeevers.co.uk::mx1.123-reg.co.uk:20:14400

# Checksum MD5 091e307412404167e4d4393650d35686

But even if I delete this file ‘/srv/paulbeevers.co.uk/config/dns/paulbeevers.co.uk.txt’, ask Symbiosis to regenerate it for me and then edit the newly created file I still get the error:

Not updating snippet, as it has been edited by hand.

When I run:

hound:~# symbiosis-dns-generate --upload --verbose

Hi @meckanix

Have you moved this domain from another machine? If so we might need to move authorisation round at our end. This would explain why the changes seem to be uploaded, but nothing appears on the DNS servers.

If so, would you mind opening a support ticket to ask that the auth be moved between accounts?

Thanks!

Patrick

No the domain was hosted with 123-REG originally and I’d like to keep the emails going to them for a bit before moving everything over.

Kind Regards
Simon

I’ll open a case with support and reference this topic.

Thank you

HI @pcherry,
Just wanted to say a massive thank you to the support team, as they re-added my password from the file below and it’s working now

/root/BytemarkDNS/upload

Kind Regards
Simon
