We're in the process of evaluating new technology for possible use as a new hosting platform. As we did in the past with the Xen platform we're currently in the middle of setting up a trial using KVM.
The KVM software allows the emulation of a system, and is very similar to the current platform we use (which is user mode Linux).
We're looking for between 10 and 20 people who are willing to move onto this trial platform for a few months to see how it works out.
This offer is open to :
- Existing users.
- Who've had a machine with us for more than two months.
- But only one machine per user.
Whats in it for you?
The most obvious change is that we'll be increasing the memory available to all users.
| Old Memory | New Memory |
| 150Mb | 256Mb |
| 300Mb | 512Mb |
| 450Mb | 768Mb |
| 600Mb | 1024Mb |
We'll also give you three months free hosting, by pushing back the date of your subscription by three months.
What are the risks?
If it doesn't work out we'll move you back to the host machine you came from, and you'll lose the increased memory you had.
We've not yet stumbled into any obvious bugs, and things seem stable and reliable. Of course we've not had any real world testing yet - which is why we're looking for volunteers.
What are the gains?
The most obvious gain is that you'll have your memory increased for free. But we'll also reward anybody brave enough to be a test user with three months free hosting - that is we'll bump the date of your subscription back by three months, regardless of whether the trial works out or not.
In our testing so far you'll also see improved I/O throughput.
How do I volunteer?
If you're interested in volunteering them please contact support - we'll update this post when the spaces are all gone.
We'd anticipate moving our volunteers in early January 2009.
Our trial is now completely full, thanks to everybody who volunteered.
