What’s the default route for IPv6 on a BigV host? The tools show the IP, but no routing information about it.
Ah, despite not being able to ping it, the default is fe80::1
ip -6 route add default via fe80::1 dev eth0
The address fe80::1 is “link-local”, i.e. it is local to a link between two interfaces. This means that in order to ping it you must specify which interface you wish to use, because it might be available on all the interfaces on a machine.
In most cases the interface would be eth0, so you’d add %eth0 to the address when pinging.
$ ping6 fe80::1%eth0
PING fe80::1%eth0(fe80::1) 56 data bytes
64 bytes from fe80::1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=5.47 ms
64 bytes from fe80::1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.197 ms
64 bytes from fe80::1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.164 ms
--- fe80::1%eth0 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2000ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.164/1.946/5.477/2.496 ms
This applies to all machines on our network, not just bigv.
