Yes, Self Signed certificates aren't really usable now, except for sites where you have really tight control over the user base. Hobby sites, test sites, and internal corporate sites may be ok with them.
But, if you visit a site with Safari, it takes about 8 clicks to bypass a self-signed certificate (or an expired certificate, or one with a name mismatch), and then you have to enter a password.
LetsEncrypt is the way to go. Their root cert is in all the main browsers and operating systems. And, of course, Bytemark's Symbiosis operating system can install and renew their free certificates automatically.
