Bandwidth monitor

Is there a system available where I can see how much bandwidth my VM consumes each month?

I noticed a few other posts mentioning there was a system in the control panel but I can’t find anything?

Try ‘VnStat’ and the PHP Add-on for nice pretty HTML/Graph pages. I have used it on my site for a few months without problem!

Measuring bandwidth usage from within your vm may not be entirely accurate. Is there somewhere you can see these statistics as measured by Bytemark?

Not yet, I’m afraid. Bandwidth within our network is free, so anything going from your backup space or mirror.bytemark.co.uk wouldn’t be chargeable.

If anything ‘vnstat’ is erring on the side of caution, which is a good thing?

We will have a bandwidth monitor available through a revamped Control Panel over the coming weeks/months, and in the interim, we’re not charging for anyone using a bit too much. That being said, we do have some graphing, and would reserve the right to charge anyone doing 100Mbps for a full month!

I am working on the new network monitor. It maybe a little while before it is ready.

Any news on this?

I’d be happy to install VnStat, does anyone know if it measures ALL traffic going through my VM (i.e not just http/ftp, I sometimes use the VM as a SOCKS5 proxy).

No, we’ve still not written it! We’re not charging for bandwidth either.

I expect vnstat will measure all outbound traffic, but I say best check with the documentation :slight_smile:

I’ve got vnstat working (apt-get install vnstat). I’ll try tunnelling something from BBC iPlayer and see what it says, I’ll let you know if it picks it up.

Works nicely, it picks up a 21MB spike just when I was watching the Matt Lucas Awards. Cheers for the suggestion:
